As a parent, you may find it difficult when your child goes off to college. There is nothing wrong with that. Many parents find themselves in this situation. College is a big step for everyone in life and it’s great that you recognize the issue. Going off to college is a similar feeling to the first day of kindergarten or even high school. It’s just on a bigger scale.

College is a new way of life for both sides, parents and students. It’s a big change for students and there’s a lot of emphasis placed on the student adjusting to the college lifestyle. We overlook that parents need to adjust as well. It’s not always easy for the parent to send their child off to college. How the parent responds can be a huge impact on how the student adapts to their new lifestyle.

The biggest change is the students living on their own. They won’t have mom or dad to remind them to do their homework or clean their room or make the student’s food. All that lies within the responsibilities of the student. Now, the parent can choose to help influence the student’s lifestyle once he/she is away. You can act like a sideline coach to help push them in the right direction.

In sports, the coach is always on the sidelines directing players to the ultimate goal: to win. The coach can’t play for them, that lies with the players. Your role as college parent will be similar to this. You need to be able to “coach” the student to adjust, just as a coach wills his players to victory. The most important thing for a parent is to trust their student. They need to believe that their student can make the commitments to adapt to college life.

The coach’s role is not on the field but his present is essential on the sidelines. The coach acts as a guide, telling players what to do and to make any adjustments when something is wrong. They encourage when the players succeeds and teach them a lesson when they fall short.

Coaches play a huge role in every athlete. Even the professional athletes need their coaches to help guide them along the way. Coaches don’t have a physical presence during games, but they can influence the outcome in many ways. This role of a coach is important in the student/parent relationship during college. Your student may or may not have problems adjusting to college. As long as they have their “coach” to guide them, it can go a long way.

It is unfortunate that many of today’s disease result from poor lifestyle choices. It is a known fact that diabetes mellitus 2, heart diseases, certain types of cancer, asthma, osteoarthritis and sleep apnea are caused by obesity. It has been labeled by several studies as “one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide.”

The sad case is that obesity is preventable. If it’s not genetically caused, it is the result of poor diet and lack of exercise. Both are clearly lifestyle choices. Indeed, just how much hype is there about healthy eating and getting active, but still studies indicate disturbing statistics: between 110,000-350,000 deaths in the United States are attributed to obesity every year, and a staggering 1 million deaths in Europe are blamed on it. To be blunt, those whose excess weight are not hereditary or caused by endocrine disorders or mental illnesses, are choosing slow and painful deaths. This perception is rather scary because then you would look at obesity mortality rates as conscious choices to end one’s life.

OTHER CAUSES OF OBESITY: Medications, endocrine disorders and psychiatric illness.

When is a person is considered obese? The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the measurement used to determine if a person is overweight. This uses the following formula: BMI = mass (kg) / height (m)2 or mass (lb) / height (in) )2 x 703. According to the World Health Organization, those with a BMI between 25- 29.9 are overweight; 30-34.9 BMI, class I obesity; 35-39.9 BMI, class II obesity and 40 BMI, class III obesity. Meanwhile, those with a BMI of 18.5 and less are considered underweight. Those with BMI between 18.5-24.9 are considered to have normal weight.

Being overweight does not happen overnight. A person does not go to bed weighing 110 lbs and wakes up weighing 200 lbs the following day. It is a systematic process, deliberately or not, of choosing all the wrong foods and leading a sedentary lifestyle. However, that is the keyword: choice. People need to make smart choices about what and how they eat. We need to find time in our busy schedules to get some cardio activity (one that’s enjoyable for us) going. We need to make the decision to live well and healthy lifestyles. Apparently this decision-making process starts in the mind, which means once we have made our choices we must be strong-willed to carry it through.

This does not mean that you have to stop eating cakes and candies altogether, or you eliminate rice and potatoes from your diet. It does not mean training hard every day for the 10K marathon. By deciding on a healthy lifestyle, we also strive for balance. Life would be boring if there is no balance. In the same breath that the world would be in chaos if there is no balance of power.

The advert is now legendary as is the sofa, and Virgin are laughing all the way to the bank. Then came Boss with their Orange fragrance for men: cue Orlando Bloom, and a host of traditional chesterfield chairs. The tills then started ringing job done. If that was good enough for Boss, it was also good enough for Liam Gallagher. He chose to market his Pretty Green fashion labels latest collection by employing the services of a be-suited Paul Weller and a sumptuous-looking chesterfield chair. A classic cut suit and a classic item of furniture: it was the match made in heaven.

Not to be outdone, Boss is back in the mix again with its female fragrance version of Orange. The advert pictures English actress Sienna Miller seductively draped across an ultra-stylish chesterfield-inspired white leather chair. She might be better known as an actress in films like Alfie, or the on-off-on partner of fellow actor Jude Law, or even as one of the witnesses in the current Leveson Enquiry into media standards, yet Miller is the perfect choice for the latest fragrance campaign: a typical English rose, but with modern appeal and a sense of fun. Traditional classic looks with a contemporary twist. Hence the contemporary chesterfield chair: sleek and stylish, but with an impeccable pedigree.
